Powerless by Lauren Roberts Book Review

By Deborah January 24, 2024

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

An epic and sizzling fantasy romance not to be missed. I loved powerless. It was indeed a combination of Hunger Games and Red Queen. I wasn’t expecting to like it. Apparently, it’s overhyped but I hadn’t seen much hype on it until I needed to read the synopsis and I saw a couple of negative reviews, but I still decided to read it and I enjoyed it.

You can easily tell that this is her first book and while editing could have been better, and there were a couple of grammatical errors that could have been avoided, however, it’s not something I really mind.

When it comes to reading, I’m really here for the storytelling and that’s what this book did. I loved it. I don’t know why I loved it so much, but I do. It also has a bit of similarities to The Selection. These were all books I really loved and would love to read again. However, I find it hard to read books again so why not just read a similar book to the books I loved if I get to experience it again in some sort of way.

Oh, another book I think this was like is the Shatter Me series. I don’t think this book has done any plagiarism in any way and I think it’s just more like inspiration for her vision.

I think this book is a brilliant piece of writing, imperfect in many ways but it sort of worked, and I’m looking forward to the future installations. Fingers crossed it doesn’t suffer from the second book syndrome and probably this is one of those books where the second book is better than the first considering how much I loved the first book.

Fourth Wing meets The Hunger Games in this epic and sizzling fantasy romance not to be missed.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites. The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society.

No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as an Elite. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, Kai Azer, she’s thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition to showcase her ‘Elite’ powers.

If the Trials and the opponents don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn really is . . . completely Ordinary.
