Book Review: The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers

By Deborah June 11, 2025

The Masterpiece

The Masterpiece isn’t necessarily a book I would have picked up on my own. However, I saw my brother reading it, and since my siblings rarely read books, that caught my attention, and I picked it up.

One of the reasons I started blogging was to connect with other book lovers, since my siblings are not. Plus, I like to share in the interests and hobbies of my loved ones—something to bond over.

I’m really glad I did. The Masterpiece caught my interest from the very beginning. It felt like a deep conversation I didn’t even know I needed. The pace was steady—slow at some points, but it gradually opened my heart and stirred my faith in ways I wasn’t expecting.

Francine Rivers’ The Masterpiece is a compelling tale of redemption that blends her signature faith-filled storytelling with deep emotional themes.

The novel introduces us to Roman Velasco—a successful L.A. artist who’s tormented by childhood trauma and hiding behind his fame, fortune, and a rebellious graffiti alter ego. On the other hand, we meet Grace Moore—a single mom trying to rebuild her life with quiet determination and a renewed faith after making some painful choices.

Their paths cross when Grace becomes his personal assistant, and from the start, it’s clear: these two are nothing alike. Roman is hot-headed and guarded. Grace is cautious but grounded. And yet as they work together, they begin to confront not only each other, but you begin to see the cracks in both their walls, and what happens when God starts gently pushing His way into the mess.

What makes The Masterpiece truly stand out is how Francine Rivers handles the theme of spiritual transformation. It’s not rushed or sugar-coated. Instead, she walks us through the uncomfortable but honest process of healing, emotionally and spiritually.

The book also touches includes themes like; trauma, pride, abandonment, temptation, forgiveness, and the weight of past mistakes, while showing how God’s grace can restore even the most broken parts of us.

It’s not just a love story. It’s a story about identity, surrender, and how even our messiest chapters can become part of a greater masterpiece.

The Masterpiece Book Blurb

The New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love, Francine Rivers, returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece.

A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco, appears to have everything he could possibly want: money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist, an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship and both their lives forever.

The Masterpiece Book Review

“Reading this was a rollercoaster. And not always the fun kind, but the reflective one.”

Reading The Masterpiece felt like riding an emotional rollercoaster—with lots of ups, downs, and unexpected turns. From the beginning, I could see where the story was headed, but getting there? Let’s just say it was a bumpy ride.

Francine Rivers blends faith, trauma, and redemption in this modern story about Roman and Grace, two people from broken pasts trying to find healing and connection. There are flashbacks and glimpses into their childhoods to help us understand how they became who they are. Honestly, I didn’t always care for those parts—I get why they were included, but they sometimes slowed down the reading experience for me.

I usually read stories for the journey, not just the ending. But with this one? I was mostly just eager to see how everything would wrap up. At several points, I got bored; it felt like we were just going through the motions. Still, I kept going because I needed to know how it would all resolve. The ending was the most satisfying part for me, and I actually slowed down to savour it once I got there.

Despite its slow pacing in parts, The Masterpiece still had an impact. It made me reflect on my relationship with God, and some of the spiritual gaps that life and circumstances have created. That part stayed with me even days after reading it. I kept on evaluating my relationship and identity in Christ.

What Stayed With Me

So while it may not be a five-star rating for all, it did do something meaningful, and maybe that’s the real masterpiece in the mess. Because can you really rate this book?

It’s really about the message this book aims to pass across about God’s love for us, and also an interesting way to navigate a relationship with God. He might not always show up in a loud or visionary way like He did with Grace and Roman, but He does show up every day in small and big ways. All we have to do is accept Him and open ourselves up to listen to Him.

“Change me, Lord. Put a new heart in me, make me the man You intend me to be”

– Roman’s Prayer to God.

This reminded me of one of my favourite bible verses-

Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

1 Chronicles 4:10

Both Roman and Jabez were broken men who dared to believe in a God Who listens, heals, and answers. That’s the real masterpiece—when we offer Him our pain, and He paints something beautiful with it.

Also, there are ways He communicates with us, via scripture – the word of God, the inner small voice of the Holy Spirit, the counsel of Godly men and women, Dreams, Visions, Angels, Circumstances, and Inner peace and conviction.1

If you are someone who says, “I’ve never heard from God,” then I challenge you right now to say a prayer.

“Heavenly Father, I have heard you speak to others. I believe you have something to say to me, please open my mind, eyes, and ears to hear you, today.”

You must first believe that He wants to talk to you and that He does actually speak to you. The truth is – He’s always speaking. We just have to believe He’s willing… and tune in.
