Book Review: House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)by Sarah J. Maas

By Deborah March 31, 2020

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I would have rated the book 5 stars but it was unnecessarily long and had a few pages that could have been taken out for a book with over 800 pages. However, this is still one of the best books I have read. It stayed with me even days after I read the book. Sarah J Mass is an amazing writer and the book is an amazing book. The gist of the story is that Bryce Quinlan is half-fae, half-human and she teams up with an angel, Hunt Athalar, to solve a mystery that is so much more than they could have expected or imagined.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) Official Synopsis:

#1 New York Times bestselling author by Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

House of Earth and Blood Book Review

Now onto the review. I loved Bryce. I enjoyed the character development and her love for Danika was obviously real. I knew she was more than the writer was letting on in the beginning and did she grow into a wonderful woman at the end. I sometimes find the main characters annoying but Bryce I loved. How she cared for her friends and everyone around her, and how she let others decide what they wanted to about her without correcting them, if they were going to have opinions without getting to know the real her, well they didn’t deserve to. Only the real ones will ever know.

Now onto Hunt. My favourite constellation is Orion so let me say I liked him instantly even when we were supposed to change our opinion about him I couldn’t just bring myself to. Even Byrce couldn’t. I loved that. Despite being called the angel of death he is so full of love and has a heart after all and also like Bryce, only the real ones get to know the real him.

The book in terms of location and navigating the present city was quite easy to read except for the vomit of information at the beginning about the angels, and who was who in the hierarchy and food chain system.

Sarah J Mass books are worth reading because of the ending the ending makes it all worth it. The book was so emotional and I found myself staying up two nights in a row to complete the book. I just wanted to know what was going to happen. I wish some things had been revealed along with the book instead of towards the end, and at the very end. It is okay that there were tips in the book. However, some of them were misleading since we were reading from the misleading point of view and could only believe what we were told. How many people did you guys suspect tho I suspected a couple of people but toward the end I was right.

There are hints all over the book. However, it’s best to just enjoy the book without playing sherlock all will be revealed.

I loved loved it. After you get through the first 100 pages it gets better. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book TBH but I really do. and I am already looking forward to what more she has for us in the next two books. I literally exploded with this book What I felt after reading this book a series of emotions. Sarah, I give this to you good good Job and thanks for this book as well as all the other books you have written. Go, girl.
