Book Lovers by Emily Henry: Is This a Book for Book Lovers? Book Review

By Deborah May 30, 2023

⭐⭐

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry is a novel I’ve had on my to-read pile for a long time. I finally decided to give it a try, despite not being a huge fan of romance novels. However, after a string of disappointing reads, I decided to give a new author a chance, someone who wasn’t overly hyped but praised for good writing and superb storytelling. And while these are the things that kept me hooked while reading the Book Lovers this just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry: A Mixed Bag for Non-Romance Readers

After hearing about Book Lovers for some time, I finally decided to give it a try, despite not being a huge fan of romance novels. My recent streak of disappointing reads prompted me to seek out a new author who wasn’t overly hyped but still garnered praise for good writing and compelling storytelling. While these aspects kept me engaged throughout the book, I must admit that it didn’t fully resonate with me.

The opening of the story, which promised a unique twist on the typical boy-meets-girl narrative, intrigued me. I appreciated the attempt to provide a fresh perspective. However, I struggled to connect with the protagonist, Nor, as much as I had hoped. Even the character of Charlie fell short of my expectations.

Another aspect that caught me off guard was the small-town setting. While the bits about the musical and the town council were enjoyable, I felt like there was untapped potential in exploring the intricacies of the small town. Perhaps this is just a personal preference, as upon reflection, I realize there may have been more happening than I initially perceived. The scenes where Nora interacted with characters other than Charlie made me impatient for the main storyline to progress.

Overall, Book Lovers was a pleasant read, but it didn’t live up to my initial expectations. Nevertheless, this being my first Emily Henry book, I am willing to give her other works a chance. While this particular story may not have suited my taste, I believe it had potential, and perhaps it simply wasn’t the right fit for me.
